BPAY Overview

BPAY is a bill payment service that allows customers to pay a business through their participating financial institution’s online or mobile banking service. The customer initiates the payment from their bank account or an eligible card account, so the business does not need to collect or store the customer’s account details.

When a merchant creates a BPAY Payment Request via the API, it will return the merchant’s BPAY Biller Code and Customer Reference Number (CRN) for the customer’s bill. The merchant shares this Biller Code and Customer Reference Number with the customer, who then opens their banking app and pay the bill based on invoice. Once the payment is processed and settled, the merchant will be notified via a webhook and the transaction can be displayed in Single API reports.

Merchants have to enable BPAY before using BPAY to process transaction. Please contact our support team to enable BPAY for your merchant account.

There are two concepts involved:

  • Biller Code: A BPAY Biller Code is a unique 6 digit number that identifies the merchants’ company, organization, or utility.
  • Customer Reference Number (CRN): CRN is a unique 10–20 digit number that appears on every customer bill. Merchants use the CRN to identify the account or bill to be paid, without providing any personal information about the customer.

This BPAY biller code should be visible on all invoices provided to customers. Merchants will also need to generate a Customer Reference Number for each customer via our payment request endpoint, see Create a Payment Request.

BPAY is not a real-time payment method. The time taken to receive and report a payment depends on when the customer submits it, the processing schedule of their financial institution, and business days. Payments submitted after a financial institution’s cut-off time, on a weekend, or on a public holiday may be processed on the next business day.
